Local Students Learn About Museums with the "Make Your Own Museum" Project
Frazier International History Museum and the National City Bank
Louisville, KY – The Frazier International History Museum and National City Bank have formed a partnership with Roosevelt Perry Elementary School and Perry Elementary School enabling students to research, examine, design and ultimately create their own museum with the National City Bank “Make Your Own Museum” project. “Through this experience students have utilized and developed a variety of important skills. Taking students beyond the walls of their classroom encourages them to take a more active role in their learning, creativity and cultural experiences,” states Nancy Shives, Program Coordinator for the Educational Department at the Frazier International History Museum, During an earlier visit to The Frazier, students examined the layout of the exhibits, the flow of the museum, the incorporation of photographs and images through the museum and how the numerous departments within The Frazier work together. Once back in the classroom, students created a layout of and content for their own museum, which included a thoroughly researched and acted out interpretation with help from Louisville’s Blue Apple Players theatre company. During the final stage of the project, the student’s are required to make a final presentation—“A Museum Grand Opening”. For this, the students have designed and created brochures and invitations to send out to family, friends, the greater community and local media. At the grand openings, guests to the student museums have the opportunity to view the exhibits on display and catch an interpretation. The students from Lincoln Elementary school and their families have been invited to a Frazier Museum night on Thursday, May 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The students and their families will be able to explore the Frazier Museum, enjoy pizza and perform their historical interpretations. On Thursday May 24th, students that participated in the National City Bank “Make Your Own Museum” project will participate in a day event at their schools, 11:00 am at Roosevelt Perry Elementary and 2:00 pm at Lincoln Elementary, respectively. During the day students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to explore the various museum designs and enjoy the interpretive performances.
