Frazier Museum Makes History
The Frazier International History Museum Debuts

Louisville, KYCiting visitor feedback and regional consumer survey findings, Frazier Arms Museum Executive Director J. Edwin Webb today announced that the Museum has changed its name to The Frazier International History Museum to better describe the Museum’s mission and visitor experience. Webb also introduced a new logo for the 2-year old institution that highlights the broad scope of exhibits and programming the Museum offers.“Our goal is to more clearly communicate to potential museum-goers the full range of activities and experiences our visitors describe. We want to provide a clear understanding of what the Museum offers and what they can expect when they arrive,” he said.

Based on visitor exit surveys, which consistently noted surprise at the many facets of the Museum’s exhibits and activities, museum staff commissioned Horizon Research International to conduct a more comprehensive consumer study, including focus groups and on-line surveys. Initial focus groups indicated a need to change the name based on a call for more flexibility and inclusion in terms of extended audience interest and reach. Nearly 1000 on-line survey responses representing six regional markets – Louisville, St. Louis, Nashville, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Atlanta  indicated that almost four in five of the target market might be interested enough in a place called The Frazier International History Museum to at least consider a visit. Almost half found the name and imagery so appealing as to say they might attend if an opportunity presented itself.  Once they heard more about the Museum and saw the additional graphics that highlight the Museum’s exhibits and programs, they were dramatically more likely to expect an enjoyable, family friendly, fun learning experience that could bring history alive.

“These results helped us realize that we needed to develop a name and positioning that better reflects the broader scope and larger perspective of what our museum promises and what our visitors experience,” said Webb.

The graphic representation of the Museum’s new logo features a component-style architecture that calls out key segments of the Museum’s offerings including The Royal Armouries, USA exhibit, The Frazier Arms Collection, The Education and Interpretive Center and The Frazier International History Association which refers to the Museum’s developing membership and sponsorship programs.

The Frazier Museum opened its doors on May 22, 2004 to worldwide acclaim largely due to its unique partnership with the Royal Armouries of Great Britain. The Frazier is the only destination outside of Great Britain to exhibit artifacts and dioramas from Britain’s oldest national museum. Since its opening, the Museum has generated more than 205,000 visitors; more than 20,000 students actively involved in curriculum based field study, more than 1,200 members and hosted more than 500 events.  The Frazier is ranked 7th in Business First’s listing of Non-Profit Tourist Attractions. In March, it was presented with The Kentucky Historical Society’s 2006 President’s Award of Excellence as the Outstanding Museum of the Year.

“While we are committed to presenting more than one thousand years of international history, we thought we would make a little history ourselves today,” said Webb.

The Frazier will celebrate its second anniversary with a series of special Founder’s Month events scheduled May 18 through June 24. Saturday, June 24, is a FREE Saturday at the Museum and as part of the festivities a FREE trip for two to the Royal Armouries in London will be awarded.  For a complete schedule of events and more information about entering to win the London trip, go to www.fraziermuseum.org.
