The sack coat was the “combat jacket” issued to United States enlisted infantry and cavalry soldiers from the time of the Civil War until late in the nineteenth century. Made of heavy wool fabric, this was a hot and uncomfortable jacket that was worn over the soldier’s undershirt. Native American scouts in Army service wore a mixture of Army issue and tribal clothing and equipment. This particular sack coat has been modified by its wearer by the addition of beautifully rendered and colorful beadwork.
